5 Stress-Free Solo Getaways to Recharge and Unwind in Michigan

5 Stress-Free Solo Getaways to Recharge and Unwind in Michigan

As much fun as traveling with family and friends can be, there’s just something refreshing about taking a solo vacation now and then. Even if you’re an introvert, traveling alone lets you set your own schedule, visit the spots you’re interested in, and reflect on the day with nothing else competing for your attention. Michigan is home to some of the most revitalizing destinations for an independent getaway. We have prepared a list of 5 stress-free solo getaways to recharge and unwind in Michigan.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or you’re a born-and-raised Michigander, here are five picks from across the Great Lakes State for a stress-free solo vacation.

1. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Nothing short-circuits stress like some fresh air and sweeping lake views. Pitch a tent or book a motel room in Empire along M-22 and spend your days beachcombing, hiking scenic trails overlooking Glen Lake, or kayaking the Crystal River. Don’t miss having a sunset picnic atop the giant perched dunes.

2. Mackinac Island

Leave the hustle (and vehicles) of mainland Michigan behind when you board the ferry to Mackinac Island. Bike or walk around this car-less island at your own pace, fueled by fudge breaks along the way (there’s no place on earth as dedicated to its fudge!). Check out Fort Mackinac and the shops downtown before finding a quiet spot to contemplate life and the cosmos as you gaze out on Lake Huron extending to the horizon.

3. Ann Arbor

As home to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor has a laidback, forward-thinking vibe. You could join locals sipping great coffee at one of Zingerman’s outposts, browse through Schuler’s Books and grab a coffee, stop in at Literati Bookstore to spend a leisurely afternoon in the upstairs café while reading the newest bestseller, or stretch out on the lawn of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Arboretum at the university. Don’t miss happy hour solo at gastropub Mash.

4. Holland

Immerse yourself in Holland’s Dutch heritage as you wander this walkable lake town. Tour the seasonal Windmill Island Gardens (open mid-April through the first week of October) or watch wooden shoes being carved downtown before heading to the beach at Lake Michigan. Later, grab an Überbrew microbrew or fresh-made stroopwafel treat in the charming shopping district.

5. Pictured Rocks

Imagine following trails that wind along the shores of Lake Superior and discovering secluded beaches tucked between sandstone cliffs streaked with mineral hues. It’s not the something you’d expect to find in the Midwest, which makes Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore all the more beautiful. The varied paths appeal to solo trekkers of any ability while trails like the Chapel Basin Loop are moderately more challenging with its 10.2-mile out-and-back loop. While Pictured Rocks is a popular warm-weather destination, you can still find plenty of spots along the shore to take in a stellar sunset panorama alone.

Are you ready to get away at these 5 stress-free solo getaways to recharge and unwind in Michigan? Each of these Michigan destinations stands out for offering the space, pace, and place to simplify solo voyaging. Treat yourself to an uninterrupted getaway that will wash your stress away.
